Eric Tetlow has kindly supplied the following extract from a
letter his aunt received from Mrs Dorothy Griebel of Massachusetts, dated 1976.
First of all, Frances Tetlow of Craigie Court in Cambridge (USA) is my
grandmother's first cousin. Her father, John Tetlow, and my grandmother's
father, Edwin Tetlow, were brothers. Frances is a Radcliffe graduate (Radcliffe
is the sister to Harvard College). It is my understanding that at the time the
young Tetlows were growing up, it was the practice to send the first male to
College, so John was it and my grandfather, Edwin, learned a trade. John
eventually became Headmaster of Girl's Latin, a high school in Boston, which
used to be entered by exam only, if I am correct. Anyway, Tetlow Street in
Boston or Roxbury is named for John Tetlow and I understand that some of his
papers are in a private collection at the Boston Public Library. I have been
told that I may access to them as a relative, and undoubtedly your son or you,
if you have time when you are here, could see them also. I don't have any idea
what is there.
I have been told that John's sister, Asenath, was a governess and companion for
Nelson Rockefeller's mother, Abigail Aldrich, who came from Rhode Island. I have
never tried to confirm this, either. I believe John's other sister was also a
teacher or tutor.
