Spanish American War 1898

Percy Tetlow ran away from home to enlist in the Spanish-American War of 1898. The letter on the left and below was written by Percy to his mother and sister, Martha. The letter reads:

Letter

Chickamauga, Ga

July 11th 1898

Dear Mother and Sister,

Our company is here and I am well. There is about seventy thousand troops here. I like to drill, it is a grand sight to see thousands of men drill. The southern people are the best soldiers.

Our regiment is in Charleston, S.C. We will leave to join our regiment soon. It is very hot here but I don't mind it. It is time to go on duty now so I will close.

I would not have missed this for a great deal. Give my love to everyone.

Do not be mad at me for enlisting for I am a good American and I will do my duty no matter what comes.

I will write every few days.

I may leave here any hour. Good Bye and God bless you all.

Percy

I am getting a picture for you.
