Henry Tetlow
A collection of Tetlow related items of interest concerning the Henry Tetlow
Co. of Philadelphia.
Henry
Tetlow and Brother were in Philadelphia in 1866, and Daniel Tetlow was there in
1883. By 1899 it was Tetlow Mfg. Co., Ltd. They developed the first satisfactory
powder base, and were the first producers of Talcum Powder. In
1866, Henry Tetlow discovered that zinc oxide was the best thing for face powder.
Q: I found a Tetlow's perfume bottle and was wondering what you could tell me about it. Its about three
inches tall and says Tetlow's perfume 10 cents in the glass, thank you?
A: Around the turn of the century nickel and dime cologne became very popular. E. W. Hoyt Company of Lowell MA was probably the most successful due to their heavy
advertising. Their advertising and bottles were widely imitated. I found the Tetlow Perfume Company listed in
1904 -1905 doing business in Philadelphia. They were in business at least through 1912. The products listed include Blanc Illusion, Gossamer Powders, Swan's
Down, Tetlow's Powder and Blue Moon Extract.

This is a vintage perfume bottle from a Maine estate.
It is stoppered by a cork that is original. The paper label at the top
of the neck identifies the bottle as a "Tetlow New Perfume Floral
Essence" bottle. It is milk glass with a side seam. It should be
noted that the seam does not go to the top of the neck. It does have a
paper label of a young child. I have no idea if that was originally part
of the perfume bottle or if it was a later application. |
