Mr ZACHARIAH TETLOW
Coal Mines Superintendent.
ZACHARIAH TETLOW, born at Hartshead on September
28th, 1828. Left farming and proceeded to Washingtonville (Ohio), at the
age of 30, where he did more than any other citizen in the upbuilding of
the city. Being skilled in mining, he was engaged as Superintendent of
the coal mines for the Cherry Valley Iron Co., serving that and
succeeding companies for 30 years, when he retired and devoted his
attention to his private business, until his demise on April 2nd 1901.
The 'Leetonia Reporter' commented regarding him,
saying, that he was well liked both by his employers and employees. It
was Mr Tetlow's custom after finishing his work for the forenoon at the
upper mines, to walk to the lower mines to attend to his duties there.
This walk was one of the prolongers of his life. As Mr Tetlow was a very
active and busy man, having attended school only a few years in his
youth, he applied himself industriously to his studies after working
hours, and thus gained useful and practical knowledge of mining
operating. By industry, honesty, and frugality he rose from a poor man
to be well-to-do, having attended to his business up to the last week of
his life. He was a member of the Order of the Sons of St. George.
The Tetlow family has established a good position for
itself on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, one of the members being
Captain James G. Tetlow, whose marriage with Alice, daughter of Warren O
Eddy (Rockford), one of the oldest and most estimable families of that
district, took place on October 2nd, 1907.
Captain Tetlow is a graduate of the Ohio State
University, and has been a practising attorney of the Winnebago County
Court more than ten years. He is prominent in legal, Military and
masonic circles.
