At Salem Church the Ninety-fifth Pennsylvania Regiment, coming upon the enemy posted in a wood, concealed from sight, an immediate engagement followed at close quarters. The One Hundred and Nineteenth, posted on the left of the road, were confronted by a largely superior force, but gallantly maintained its position, although it suffered severely, losing out of four hundred and thirty-two men twelve killed and one hundred and twelve wounded.

Africa; Name of next of Kin: Father: Joseph Tetlow of 84 Oldham Rd, Ashton-u-Lyne.  Not married.

James Tetlow Sergeant 34782 Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry 20 Sep 1901   Boer War Memorial, Saxonwold, Johannesburg, Gauteng, RSA

James Tetlow attested on 23rd August 1900 and was killed at Florence in the Orange Free State on the 20th September 1901 when the TMI clashed with a group of 40 burghers from Kritzinger's Commando. The Boers were waiting for the 2 companies of TMI in a donga on a farm. The TMI lost two killed (Captain R.T.Barrett and James Tetlow, who were in the van) and 3 wounded. The Boers loss is not stated but the TMI took 13 prisoners and captured an artillery piece. On the roll, Tetlow is put down as killed at Commissie, but in the Field Force Casualty List he is down as killed at Florence. The action is known in the history books as Florence as well. It is about 8 miles from Zastron in the Orange Free State.
